Description
The origin of the name is thought to derive from the Celtic -UZ- designating a high place and -La Rousse- recalling either Marguerite des Baux's hair or the color of the stone surrounding the castle. The Princes of Orange, then the House of Les Baux, gave Suze many great lords, including Count François de la Baume. In 1587, he and his mare were wounded in a mortal combat. He then uttered the famous phrase: "Allons la grise, allons mourir à Suze! From Montélimar, he was transported to Suze, where they died. Since 1978, the château has been home to the University of Wine. You can also enjoy the wooded park "la Garenne" and stroll through the narrow streets.
