Description
This vast lake of glacial origin, surrounded by high limestone cliffs, is a magnificent place for relaxation and recreation. Walkers will be delighted to contemplate the lake and enjoy water sports activities.
Lac de Nantua was awarded the "ENS" or sensitive natural area label by the Ain department in 2018. Real natural and landscaped jewels of the Ain department, the sites benefiting from the ENS "Espaces naturels sensibles" label are managed to preserve the biodiversity they host and developed for opening to the public (barring exceptions due to the fragility of the environments).
The original natural lake covers an area of 141 ha, with a maximum depth of 43 meters. Today, the site can be explored independently. This vast site offers numerous access points for various uses: parking, picnic tables and a "grassy beach" at Pré Gadgène in Montréal-la-Cluse.
Hikes are available along the cliff crests, with views of the lake and the dry gladiolus meadows. Departure is from Montréal-la-Cluse along the Landeyron stream.
